Equal Opportunities Policy Statement

Overall statement
Horspath Nursery believes in the unique value of every child and is therefore committed to meeting each child’s individual needs. We will do our best to provide equal opportunities for all children and families who come to our nursery, as well as promoting equal opportunities in our employment practices.

Welcome policy
Horspath Nursery seeks to ensure that all visitors feel welcome by providing easily accessible and understandable information and resources.

Gender
All children, both boys and girls, are encouraged to express themselves through their individual and co-operative play. This will not be based on pre-conceived ideas about gender roles, and nursery workers will support the children’s exploration of new experiences and growing understanding in an open minded and unprejudiced manner.

Name Calling
We are committed to delivering an education that promotes and fosters the positive use of language. We will not allow derogatory name-calling or abusive language of any kind.

Fair Recruitment
As an Equal Opportunities provider, it is our policy to appoint the best person for each post and this will be the only criterion for appointment. Once appointed, each employee will be fairly treated, and encouraged to develop professionally as far as he/she is able.

Relations between people of different cultural and racial groups
We will promote good relations with people of all cultures, in our play, our stories, our group times and our behaviour, and encourage an understanding of the interesting differences and similarities which exist among all human beings.

Observation and assessment
In order to understand the needs and interests of the children in our nursery, we will carry out a continuing programme of observation and assessment. Based on these observations, we will develop a curriculum which addresses the needs and interests of the children, fairly and without prejudice. We will continually re-assess our resources in order to put this curriculum into practice.

Children with Special needs
We will make every effort to recognise and respond to the needs of all the children, and by observation and assessment, make special provision for those who have special needs which may require particular support and help, In order to keep this in mind, we have a policy for children with special needs and a designated SENCO on the staff. This person will be aware of the legislation related to children with special needs and continually monitor the situation in order to satisfy all the requirements of such children.

Relationship with parents
The nursery will foster good relationships with all the parents and carers of the children in the nursery. We recognise that the parent is the most important person in the child’s life and we want to promote a mutually supportive relationship between the nursery and parents so that there can be a continuous two-way flow of information, knowledge and expertise. We welcome parents to the nursery to discuss, participate, help and make suggestions.
